Serpentinization as a route to liberating phosphorus on habitable worlds

چکیده
A general assumption about the geochemical behavior of phosphorus (P) is that it exists exclusively in +5 oxidation as phosphate. However, extremely reducing environments, other states such +3 may also be stable. Such environments—if prevalent globally—may determine planetary habitability, which part governed by nutrient availability, including availability element phosphorus. Here we show a route to P liberation from water-rock reactions are thought common throughout Solar System. We report speciation several serpentinite rocks and muds include ion phosphite (HPO32− with P3+) reduction phosphate predicted thermodynamic models serpentinization. Furthermore, amount exceeds amounts three nine samples analyzed. As result, olivine silicates ultramafic alter serpentine minerals, significantly more soluble reactive should released under low redox conditions, liberating this key for life. Thus, accessible developing life where water direct contact rock, providing source potentially habitable worlds.

Habitable worlds with no signs of life.
'Most habitable worlds in the cosmos will have no remotely detectable signs of life' is proposed as a biological hypothesis to be tested in the study of exoplanets. Habitable planets could be discovered elsewhere in the Universe, yet there are many hypothetical scenarios whereby the search for life on them could yield negative results. Scenarios for habitable worlds with no remotely detectable ...
متن کاملHabitable Worlds: Delivering on the Promises of Online Education.
Critical thinking and scientific reasoning are central to higher education in the United States, but many courses (in-person and online) teach students information about science much more than they teach the actual process of science and its associated knowledge and skills. In the online arena specifically, the tools available for course construction exacerbate this problem by making it difficu...
متن کاملExploring extrasolar worlds: from gas giants to terrestrial habitable planets.
Almost 500 extrasolar planets have been found since the discovery of 51 Peg b by Mayor and Queloz in 1995. The traditional field of planetology has thus expanded its frontiers to include planetary environments not represented in our Solar System. We expect that in the next five years space missions (Corot, Kepler and GAIA) or ground-based detection techniques will both increase exponentially th...
متن کاملExotic Earths: forming habitable worlds with giant planet migration.
Close-in giant planets (e.g., "hot Jupiters") are thought to form far from their host stars and migrate inward, through the terrestrial planet zone, via torques with a massive gaseous disk. Here we simulate terrestrial planet growth during and after giant planet migration. Several-Earth-mass planets also form interior to the migrating jovian planet, analogous to recently discovered "hot Earths....
متن کاملGlaciers and Ice Sheets As Analog Environments of Potentially Habitable Icy Worlds
Icy worlds in the solar system and beyond have attracted a remarkable attention as possible habitats for life. The current consideration about whether life exists beyond Earth is based on our knowledge of life in terrestrial cold environments. On Earth, glaciers and ice sheets have been considered uninhabited for a long time as they seemed too hostile to harbor life. However, these environments...
